Waiting for Superman

This was a great documentary, although very disheartening.  The fact that so many schools are in such bad shape, that too many families have to participate in a lottery in their only hopes of sending their children to a better school, a charter school, is so disturbing.  Watching the families and children themselves wait to find out if they will be accepted was heart wrenching.  This is yet another example of how unfair and unequal our school system and funding is.  I wish that documentaries like these were watched by more people, specifically the families of children that attend good schools.  Maybe if they were made more aware, they would be more sympathetic to the plights of these families and would be more proactive in helping the cause to improve our school systems and the attempt to make it more equal for all.  One statistic that I found very interesting was that it costs $130,000 to maintain an inmate in prison for 4 years and it costs $107,000 to educate a child from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  This just proves the point that if we invested the money in education that is needed, in the end, there would be so many less adults that end up in prisons because of having been properly educated, it would be a win-win for everyone!
