This worries me on many levels. There is no question that we have a shortage of qualified teachers in this country, but to me, the answer is not lowering the qualifications required to become licensed. This should be a wake up call that more funding needs to go to education so we can hire and maintain qualified, education based degree holding teachers to teach America's children. The education system in this country is lacking and in crisis in many areas already. If we allow people to become teachers that have not had the proper training and education, things are only going to get worse. This is not to say that many of these people don't have good intentions, but education and its educators need to be taken seriously, as a serious and important field and occupation. When we talk about today's children, we are talking about the future of this country. For me at least, that is not something to be taken lightly.
